:Delete backup sets or reduce the backup frequency

Last Updated:Jul 14, 2023

Each time Database Backup (DBS) performs a backup, a backup set is generated. This topic describes how to delete backup sets or reduce the backup frequency of a backup instance to reduce backup storage costs.

Usage notes

  • By default, log backup is enabled, and logs are readable. You cannot disable the log backup feature.

  • The retention period of log backup sets is 30 days and cannot be changed.

  • Log backup sets cannot be deleted.

View the size of backup sets

Total size of backup sets = Size of data backup sets + Size of log backup sets

Note

You can view the size of backup sets in the Logical Backup section on the Basic Information page.

Delete data backup sets or reduce the data backup frequency

Manually delete a data backup set

You can manually delete a data backup set that is automatically generated or generated when you manually initiate a backup task. You cannot recover a deleted data backup set. Proceed with caution when you perform this operation.

  1. Access the Data Source page in the DBS console. In the top navigation bar, select a region. Then, click the ID of the desired instance.

  2. In the left-side navigation pane, click Backup Data.

  3. On the Backup Data page, click Data Backup on the Logical Backup tab.

  4. Find the data backup set that you want to delete and click Delete in the Actions column.

  5. In the message that appears, click Delete.

Automatically delete data backup sets

DBS automatically deletes backup sets when their retention period ends. You can shorten the retention period of backup data sets so that DBS immediately deletes the data backup sets whose retention period ends. You can use this method to delete data backup sets that are automatically generated or generated when you manually initiate a backup task. You cannot recover a deleted data backup set. Proceed with caution when you perform this operation.

  1. Access the Data Source page in the DBS console. In the top navigation bar, select a region. Then, click the ID of the desired instance.

  2. In the left-side navigation pane, click Backup Policy.

  3. On the Backup Policy page, click the Logical Backup tab.

  4. Click Edit. In the Basic Backup dialog box, shorten the retention period of data backup sets.

    Important

The data backup sets that have been retained longer than the specified retention period are immediately deleted and cannot be restored. Proceed with caution when you perform this operation.

For example, a data backup set of a backup instance has been retained for 31 days. If you change the retention period to 30 days, DBS immediately deletes the data backup set.

  5. Click OK.

Reduce the backup frequency of a backup instance

You can reduce the number of data backup sets by reducing the backup frequency of a backup instance.

  1. Access the Data Source page in the DBS console. In the top navigation bar, select a region. Then, click the ID of the desired instance.

  2. In the left-side navigation pane, click Backup Policy.

  3. On the Backup Policy page, click the Logical Backup tab.

  4. Click Edit. In the Basic Backup dialog box, modify the backup cycle.

For example, data is backed up once a day previously. You can reduce the frequency to two backups a week. This way, the number of data backup sets is reduced.

  5. Click OK.
